SynchroNice / Third Edition / 2018
SYNCHRO NICE 33 Synchronized Skating Championship after we won the Swedish nationals again. In total, I performed 3 times at the WJSSC, so it was about time to switch to Senior, so I was happy to get this chance and even more excited when they made me Vice-Captain of our team. What do you like most about Synchronized Skating? Well, it’s in our team name… the “Unity” is what I like most, but of course there are many other things I love like for instance the traveling together. You get to know your teammates on a totally different level when on the road together and being depended of each other, you build true friendships. Furthermore, you get to meet so many other skaters all over the world performing at in- ternational competitions. And performing International- ly means you’re representing Sweden, and that leaves me with a proud, honored and humble feeling. Okay and now what…what are your next objectives? Well, short term I would like to develop and grow as a Senior skater, but on a longer term, when I finish school, I would like it very much to get the opportunity to live abroad for a while. Of course, I would like to be able to skate where ever this abroad might be and improve my language skill and definitely absorb some of the diffe- rences in culture. Any other favorite teams Wilma? Oh yes of course, I really love the Finnish Team Rockettes and the Canadi- an team Nexxice. Last year’s Short program of Nexxice Junior was stunning. Both music and Choreography where totally in sync and just breathtaking. But when talking about dresses, I must say that I really love the outfits those Rockettes are wearing, just beautiful. I also love our own Short program dresses, they are so gorgeous, and nice details… The dresses are made by my first coach in Single skating. Is there anything you would like to say that I haven’t asked? No not necessarily, but I would like to wish all Synchronized Skaters the best of luck for the new season. My advice? Believe in your coach, believe in your team and certainly believe in yourself then you will certainly succeed. Thanks Wilma, I think we’ll see a lot more of you in the future, good luck to you too. How old or better how young are you Wilma? I’m 17 years old and this is my first experience as a senior. And this is a new team you told us, so please, introduce your new team to us, what’s the name of your team? Our team is called “Team Unity” and it’s not just a new team, it’s a totally new skating club as well. Of course, many of the Junior Convivium Skaters also made the switch to the new team, but we also managed to attract other skaters from the solo discipline and also from other countries like Australia, Canada and Finland. That sounds like fun? Yes, it is fun, being part of some- thing totally new, but with our old familiar coach Helen Wieland, who coached us at team Convivium as well. Totally new, but everything feels very familiar at the same time…. It really feels like family. Helen has a lot of experience in coaching Senior as well. What makes it so extra special? Well, being a totally new club everybody is extra motivated to succeed. All skaters help each other in everything and we’re all working towards the same goals. All this positivity feels very inspiring and will help us achieve our goals. How did you start your skating career anyway? I’m from Götenborg and we lived really close to one of the ice rinks so my parents took me and my brothers to the Ice rink quite often since I was only 3 years old. Being born with the necessary competitive genes, I wanted to join the skating club, just like my brothers who were playing hockey at the time. So, I joined the club when I turned 4 years old and took official ska- ting lessons and I started competing at the age of 5. Synchronized skating competition? No hahaha, first I started as a solo skater and I competed at what is called an A-level here in Sweden. But you switched to Synchro? Not at first, but after my solo practices I always stayed to watch the Synchronized Skating practices. I remember being impressed by their speed, their technical skills and the very exciting lifts. At a certain moment, I switched clubs and the new club had a number of Synchro teams. After about a year I decided to do a combination in solo and Synchronized Skating. I started in Advanced Novice team ‘Karisma’ and It was bingo right away… we won the Swedish Nationals in my first year. After 3 years being a novice skater in Karisma I joined team ‘Convivium’ as a Junior skater and had the opportunity to experience my first World Junior “I WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SKATE WHERE EVER THIS ABROAD MIGHT BE”
