A WOMANWITH THE RIGHTMINDSET At the Lumière Cup in Eindhoven we met with the charming Polish coach Agnieszka Filipowicz, but no worries, everybody just calls her Agnes. Agnes is a confident young woman, just over 40, who definitely knows what she wants and she’s a coach but also the president of her own skating club. Well Agnes, your own Skating club, let’s find out how this came about. What’s the name of your club? Our club Is called SKF Iceskater and within the club we have 8 Teams: Ice Fire Pre-Juvenile, Ice Fire Juvenile, Ice Fire Basic Novice, Ice Fire Mixed Age, Ice Fire Mixed Age Young, Ice Fire Adult A, Ice Fire Adult B and our Ice Fire Junior. And your role in all this is? I’m the President of my club and I’m also the head coach of Ice Fire Junior, Ice Fire Novice Basic and Ice Fire Mixed Age and I do all this with my dear colleague Coach Marcin Miedlarz. And where can we find SKF Iceskater? In Gdansk Poland. Are you from Gdansk as well? Yes, I was born and raised in this beautiful city. How come you own your own skating club, where did it all start? Hmmm, that’s a long story and it goes way back, to the time I was 6 years old. That’s when I attended Skating school in Gdansk for the first time. From the very beginning I knew that skating would be my life. I have two younger sisters who skate as well. I first started as an Ice-Dancer and made it to Vice National Champion in Ice- Dance in Poland 4 times and even scored an 11th spot at the Junior World Championships. After that, I have been skating in an Ice Show, yes, ‘Holiday on Ice’ and I skated in the Principal Adagio Pair. Then, when I got back home, I started as a Coach in Synchronized skating. Synchronized Skating was a totally new ice sport in Poland and I just love it. At first, I started coaching Team Amber Dance, another Polish junior team, for a few years, but then the feeling that I needed to open my own club got stronger and stronger, so fi nally I just did it. This was 7 years ago and together with my colleague Marcin we opened Synchronized Skating Club “SKF Iceskater.” And now, just 7 years later, we have over 200 very motivated skaters and 8 beautiful teams. But there’s no Senior team? No, not yet, anyway, but this is the second season of our Junior team Ice Fire. Last December we won the golden medals in every category here at the Polish National Champi onship and with that, one of my dreams came true. And as we saw, your teams did a great job at the Lumière Cup in the Netherlands as well? I’m very happy with our results at Lumière Cup. I believe we had a really good start of our season, however, we still have a lot to improve, but I believe we are definitely on the right track. My next goal is to establish a good score at the Junior World Championships in Switzerland. You say that with so much passion in your voice, why is that? For me it’s just very important to de velop this skating discipline within Poland. That is why we also decided, now three years ago, to show synchronized skating to a much bigger audience in Poland. We organized our own International 9 SYNCHRO NICE
