doing Michaela? If I were not Synchronized Skating, I would most likely be playing soccer and Lacrosse. Since soccer is a fall sport, I had to quit once I made Skyli ners Junior. The intense practice schedule, along with schoolwork, made the two very hard to balance. In the spring and summer, I play Lacrosse which is my hobby outside of skating. Since the spring skating season isn’t as busy, lacrosse gives me the opportunity to get invol ved at my school and it keeps me in shape during our month break in the summer. Both still in school, but have you already set a direc- tion for a professional career in later life? Michaela: As of right now I am not sure where I will be attending college next fall. I am interested in studying Biology and becoming a Physician’s Assistant, with a focus in Orthopedics. I hope to minor in Psychology and combine the two to help athletes recover from injuries both physically and mentally. Madison: For me goes more or less the same as Michaela, I am not sure yet where I will continue my studies. I have applied to schools in this area so I can continue skating for the Skyliners organization. My interest in anatomy/physiology and sports medicine, combined with my athletic experiences has led me to the Athletic Training/Doctorate in Physical Therapy path. Seeking treatment for injuries I’ve endured while competing has led me to experience firsthand what these professions entail. I have great appreciation for the skills, support, and empathy shown within these professions. Any specific competitions you guys like more than others, Michaela? Yes, our favorite competitions are French Cup and the U.S. National Championships. At nationals, the team is supported by all of our Skyliner qualifying teams. The cheers of both our families and close friends is a comforting feeling as we take to the ice. It is also an opportunity to see our friends from other teams around the U.S. My favorite international competition is French Cup. I have gone all four seasons and enjoy it every time. The week is full of shopping in the streets of Rouen, and eating macaroons and crepes. While abroad we usually get at least three hours to explore the country we are in. It is a great way for us to take in our surroundings in between practices and homework time. And is there also a specific team you like more than others? My favorite team to watch is Team Unique from Finland. Every spring we have the opportunity to train with Miru, their head coach. She helps us with our technical elements, as well as our ex pression and presentation. She has the ability to draw so much emotion from her own skaters, and she helps us to do the same. While abroad, the team and I always look forward to seeing her and watching Team Unique compete. We look up to the way they deliver their pro grams with so much attack and passion. Rejected by the IOC, but on the other hand, Synchro is evolving, how do you feel about that? Madison: Coa ches, athletes, parents, and supporters should continue trying to bring awareness to the sport, even though our sport will not be a part of the Olympics during 2022. People will come to the realization that this sport challenges skaters in every aspect. From communication to focus, each skater has to perform to the best of their ability, while still being mindful of the choices their teammates make during their performances. Michaela: I believe the synchro community grows tremendously every year. Each season, coaches and athletes are pushing the boundaries in artistic and technical elements, continuously enhancing their pro grams. It has been amazing to watch the transformati on of programs, nationally and internationally, just over the last four years. Lifts have become more challenging and the stories behind each program have become more creative and complex. I believe that in order to see the sport of synchronized skating expand, coaches and athletes need to continue on this trend of consistently training while also challenging the limits of the sport. Well it was very nice talking to you 2 young ladies with such dedication. Silver at World’s last year… Only one step to make this year, good luck on that. Thanks for the interview.
