SynchroNice / Fourth Edition / 2019
Marigold IceUnity, for many Synchro Skating fans the embodiment of Synchronized Skating, also for Cmil… The Man on the team. He never stopped believing that he could be part of this team, one fine day. Let’s have a chat with Cmil. HI CMIL, BY THE WAY, IS THAT YOUR REAL NAME? Hi Richard, no in fact my name is Simoeemil Oiva Esaias Nurmela, but you’ll understand, with a long name like that they all just call me Cmil. So, it’s not just that you are the only boy on the team, we also heard you have a twin sister on the team? That’s correct. Who’s the older one? Well, we were born on the 3rd of August 1998 and I was there a bit earlier than my sister, so that makes me the older one, but I can’t say that I am the wiser one, because my sister is extremely wise. Where are you from? I was born in Turku, but I now live in Helsinki. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE ON ICE AND HOW IT LED TO YOUR WISH TO SKATE ON MIU? I started skating when my parents took me to skating lessons when I was 5 years old. My sister started the same way. I have been always a synchro skater, but I took single skating lessons too, when I was in advanced novice level. I wanted to skate in senior level all the time, even when I was just a kid. I can’t remember a time not having this dream to skate in Marigold IceUnity. What’s it like to be the only boy on the team? I don’t know what to think about the fact that I am the only guy in the team. I have always been in a team with just girls, so it’s normal for me and I’m kind of used to it. Of course, sometimes it’s hard to understand women and when conversation topics get too girly, I’m out. I don’t really get special treat ment within the team. I’m a teammember just like the others and I stand in the same line with girls. Is it nice to have a twin on board? Having twin sister on the same team is a clear advantage. We support each other and it’s nice to have someone who knows what is going on in a team without having to explain how things work. So, I would say it makes skating more special when you have a twin sister on the same team. We both have our own strengths in skating, and we are differently good skaters. If you would ask me what’s so special or what isn’t, than I would have a hard time to answer because I have always had my sister on the same team. We both clearly have our own opinions and visions about how things should work, and we SYNCHRO NICE 161
