SynchroNice / Fourth Edition / 2019

Captain Kelly Britten WHAT’S YOUR HISTORY, HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN SYNCHRO? I started skating in the “learn to skate” program at the age of 3 and was introduced to synchro at the age of 10 when my older sister joined the Burlington Ice Image Novice team. I sat in awe watching them train all through that summer and we found out towards the end of August that the Juvenile team was still looking for a few more members. The first time on the ice with the team I knew I found my new passion. I moved up through the ranks in the Ice Image club, joining the senior team at the age of 14. For two years, I moved out of club to a senior team based out of Toronto called FUSION. At this time, I was just finishing up high school and hoping to go to university, so I took a small break from skating to better my grades and focus on school. This didn’t last long however, since once in university I joined the varsity skating team to keep myself on the ice. During this time, I took a course offered through Skate Canada to become a synchronized skating judge. While trial judging I sat again in awe at the beautiful skating on the ice in front of me. I decided it was time to get back into competitive synchro. At the age of 20 I joined NEXXICE senior and am already in my eighth sea son on the team! 3 YEARS OLD - I MEAN 3 YEARS YOUNG - HOW COME? Well my mother was indeed a skater when she was younger which I believe is what led to her putting all her kids into the learn to skate program. My sister skated also all through high school but decided to pursue a career outside of the rink. My brother was a compet itive ice dancer for several years before joining the Disney on Ice tour for 4 years. So, you can say it’s in the genes. AT 28 AND AFTER 8 YEARS OF NEXXICE SENIOR, DO YOU STILL HAVE GOALS IN SYNCHRO? I always want to become a better skater, every single day, and I have already started coaching in the NEXXICE club which is a great opportunity. My goal for that is to inspire the kids I coach to want to continue with this sport for life. Hello Kelly, team captain, so this is probably not your first year on Nexxice? No, in fact I’ve been skating in Senior for 8 years now. You look way too young for that, how old are you? I was born January 21st, 1991 so, I’m 28. Everybody says just Nexxice, but what is the full name of the club/team? NEXXICE Senior Synchronized Skating Team. Are you from Burlington? No, I live in Dundas 20 Kilometers from Burlington. And born there as well? No, I was born in Lasalle Quebec. Who’s your head coach? That’s a duo: Shelley Simonton Barnett and Anne Schelter. SYNCHRO NICE 135
